Season & Weather
Nepal’s diverse geography, ranging from tropical lowlands to the world’s highest mountains, creates a wide variety of weather conditions throughout the year. Understanding the seasons will help you choose the best time for your trekking or travel adventure.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the most popular trekking seasons in Nepal. The weather is mild, skies are generally clear, and the hills come alive with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers.
- Temperature: 16°C to 23°C in lower regions; cooler at higher altitudes
- Best For: Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang, Manaslu, and Mardi Himal treks
- Highlights: Clear mountain views, colorful landscapes, and moderate weather
Summer / Monsoon (June to August)
This season brings heavy rainfall, especially in the mid-hills and southern regions. While trails can be slippery and landslides are possible, it’s also the time when the landscape turns lush and green.
- Temperature: 18°C to 30°C in lower regions
- Best For: Rain-shadow areas like Upper Mustang and Dolpo
- Highlights: Fewer crowds, vibrant greenery, and rich local farming life
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is considered the best trekking season in Nepal. The monsoon rains clear the dust and haze, offering the clearest mountain views of the year. Days are warm, and nights are cool, perfect for long trekking routes.
- Temperature: 15°C to 24°C in lower regions; colder in the mountains
- Best For: All major treks including Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu
- Highlights: Crisp skies, great visibility, comfortable temperatures, and major festivals like Dashain and Tihar
Winter (December to February)
Winter offers clear skies and fewer trekkers on the trails. However, temperatures can drop below freezing at higher altitudes, and some high passes may be closed due to snow.
- Temperature: 4°C to 15°C in lower regions; below 0°C at high altitudes
- Best For: Lower altitude treks such as Ghorepani Poon Hill, Helambu, and lower Annapurna regions
- Highlights: Peaceful trails, crystal-clear views, and tranquil mountain settings
Best Time to Trek in Nepal
The Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November) seasons are generally regarded as the most favorable times for trekking and outdoor activities. Both offer stable weather, clear skies, and excellent visibility for mountain scenery.
